German court awaiting details of Gurlitt will
Legal News | 2014/05/09 17:55

A German court says it's awaiting details of a will drawn up by Cornelius Gurlitt, the reclusive art collector who hoarded more than 1,000 artworks at his apartment and died this week.

Munich district court president Gerhard Ziel said Wednesday that Gurlitt left a will with a notary in the southwest region of Baden-Wuerttemberg, news agency dpa reported.

He said the court expects to receive the document next week and will then establish whether it was correctly filed and whether Gurlitt named heirs.

Gurlitt's spokesman isn't commenting on who might inherit the works.

But German officials say that any heirs are bound by a deal under which Gurlitt agreed that hundreds of pieces from the collection would remain in government hands while they are checked for a possible Nazi-era past.

Casino law hinges on Massachusetts high court case
Law Firm Topics | 2014/05/05 21:12

The fate of casino gambling in Massachusetts may hinge on a case before the state's highest court Monday.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is set to hear arguments in a case centered on whether a question should be allowed on the November ballot asking voters if they want the state's 2011 casino law repealed. The court is expected to issue a decision by July.

If allowed on the ballot, the referendum could upend the state's ongoing casino licensing process.

Gambling giants MGM, Wynn, Mohegan Sun and others have expressed concern they could lose millions of dollars they've invested in the planning, development and promotion of their proposals if the referendum prevails. They also argue the state risks losing much more.

"Jobs certainty and billions of dollars in economic development hang in the balance," said Carole Brennan, a spokeswoman for MGM, which has proposed an $800 million casino project in downtown Springfield. "The Gaming Act allows for the creation of more than 10,000 jobs and the recapture of billions of dollars in tax revenues that are currently leaving the state. It doesn't make sense to forgo those opportunities."

State Attorney General Martha Coakley, a Democrat running for governor this year, has ruled that the question violates the state constitution and shouldn't be allowed on the ballot.

Court says final 'No' to Jewish restitution claim
Legal Focuses | 2014/05/02 17:37

The Czech Republic's highest court has confirmed the rejection of a restitution claim by the descendants of a Jewish man who owned a snap button factory that was taken over by the Nazis and then nationalized.

The Constitutional Court confirmed its 2010 verdict, which overturned a 2009 Supreme Court ruling and all previous rulings of lower courts that found in favor of three relatives of Zikmund Waldes, who owned the Koh-i-noor factory in Prague when the Nazis seized it in 1939 during their occupation of what was then Czechoslovakia. The heirs will also not get back a collection of some 20 paintings that were housed in the plant.

The latest verdict sent to The Associated Press by the court on Friday is final. It said the legal complaint by the heirs was "clearly baseless" because it didn't contain any new arguments.
